Adrian Benepe is an American urban parks advocate and former New York City Parks Commissioner. He was born on November 9, 1955, in New York City. He served as the New York City Parks Commissioner from 2002 to 2012, under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. During his tenure, he oversaw the addition of more than 800 acres of new parkland to the city, including the opening of the High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Benepe is also a former president of The Trust for Public Land, a national conservation organization focused on creating parks and protecting land for public use. He currently serves as Senior Vice President for City Park Development at the Trust.
Benepe has received numerous awards for his work advocating for urban parks and conservation, including the Frederick Law Olmsted Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Green Spirit Award from the Horticultural Society of New York. He is also a member of the board of directors of the City Parks Alliance, a national organization that advocates for urban parks.
